Since 2005, VESL (the Volunteer ESL Tutor Training Project) has supported the professional development of volunteer ELL tutors throughout the city of Calgary. VESL is the collaborative effort of three Calgary ELL service providers with long standing volunteer programs: Bow Valley College, the Calgary Public Library, and the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society. The project hosts six face-to-face training workshops throughout the year that are offered free-of-charge to volunteers who support language learners in organizations througout Calgary.

In this interactive workshop, participants learned about the benefits of playing games with English language learners and had the opportunity to experience a variety of hands-on games to use in tutorial sessions.

The workshop was facilitated by Dara MacKay, a faculty member at the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement.

Visit the VESL Network to learn about upcoming VESL workshops and download information, handouts, and resources from over twenty previously held VESL workshops.

  • The workshop was fantastic! Everything tonight will be applicable in my ESL class. Gave me new ideas and activities to try. I learned new games to try that will encourage more participation from shy students and also that will be lots of fun.

  • So practical and easy to use the ideas! I feel inspired to play more games and how to use them for different outcomes.
