DiverseCity onBoard

The go-to-program that connects qualified candidates to volunteer board positions.

Bow Valley College, through the Center for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement, is pleased to be a partner with the National DiverseCity on Board initiative and to bring this unique program to Calgary.

DiverseCity onBoard is a unique board matching service that connects qualified, pre-screened candidates from visible minorities and underrepresented communities to volunteer board positions. The connections are made through a searchable database that matches qualified diverse individuals with board opportunities. 

All prospective board members will be trained in board governance through a series of self-paced online courses, offered through Ryerson University. The DiverseCity onBoard online self-paced training is unique because it is embedded in principles of diversity and inclusion and provides effective board governance fundamentals. 

The DiverseCity onBoard Training is a series of seven courses (approximately 20 hours) at a cost of $250. The board governance training includes seven modules:

  • Legal Roles and Responsibilities
  • Finance Fundamentals
  • Commitment to Diversity
  • Risk Management
  • Strategic Planning
  • Resource Development

The Centre offers customized intercultural training workshops that meet the continual changing demands of a diverse workforce.

Laying the Foundation Series

Laying the Foundation is an introductory workshop series that focuses on intercultural training designed to support workplaces in building the intercultural awareness, knowledge, and skills required in a global marketplace.

This series consists of four workshops of which the first two are prerequisites.

Targeted Intercultural Learning Workshops

These intercultural workshops focus on intercultural communication strategies for supervision and customer service. The workshops can be customized based on workplace needs.

This is the first prerequisite workshop in the Laying the Foundation workshop series. This workshop introduces participants to concepts of culture as well as basic intercultural skills and knowledge.

Customer Service in an Intercultural Setting

This workshop is applicable to all employees within the client's workplace. The workshop focuses on improving communication channels at every level, with a broader goal of enhancing employee and customer satisfaction. This workshop will draw upon situations and examples applicable to the client's work culture. Topics will be selected following a needs-based discussion with the client to determine the most applicable and relevant focus.

Duration: 4 hours

Intercultural Supervision

This workshop will target front line supervisors who manage culturally diverse employees. The goal of this workshop is to address intercultural communication strategies as they relate to providing supervision.

Major topics will be defined by the needs of your organization and may include but are not limited to:

  • Cultural Norms and Cross Cultural Relations
  • Communication Styles and Negotiating Differences
  • Conflict Management Strategies for Working with Linguistically Diverse Employees

This workshop is designed for individuals who are currently in managerial roles or those who are in such a position to transition to a managerial role. At the conclusion of the workshop participants will have a more culturally aware focus as it relates to the day to day operations of their workplace and how it relates to the effective management of a culturally diverse workforce.

Customized language training delivered in your workplace.

Workplace training can be complex due to factors such as time constraints, number of employees, workplace specific content, and individual concerns.

Career Enhancement Language Development Series

The English in the Workplace courses have been designed for employers looking to support the language development of individuals or groups of employees seeking to enhance their career through targeted language skill development. All of the courses can be delivered in the workplace or on-site at Bow Valley College.

This course is designed for individuals who want to enhance their communication skills by developing their pronunciation through strategy instruction and practice. New patterns of speech will be taught with a focus on rhythm and intonation. Participants will increase their listening comprehension and build essential skills for improved communication.

Presentations

Presentation skills are key components of successful business operations whether in a one-on-one setting or in front of a larger audience. Having the confidence to present helps ensure a clear and concise message is communicated. This course will enhance professionalism as it relates to non-verbal communication and develop the speaker's capability and oral fluency through strategy instruction and formal practice.

Duration: 40 hours

Business Writing

This course develops professional writing skills, focusing on grammar, sentence structure, and rhetorical patterns commonly used in business.

Duration: 40 hours

Professional communication is essential in a day-to-day work environment. Understanding unspoken rules helps to guide conversation and ensure that the speaker is able to effectively engage, elaborate, and change topics with ease. Conversation management helps internationally educated professionals adapt to the workplace environment not only linguistically, but also culturally.

Networking is a skill used on a daily basis in the workplace. This course highlights the importance of everyday communication as a tool to build professional relationships. Everyday Interactions will facilitate rapport building through targeted skill development.
