ELL Training Network

Professional learning for ELL practitioners

The ELL Training Network is a place for ELL practitioners to access professional development workshops, webinars, resources, and information to better meet the needs of English language learners.

In response to the needs of the Calgary ELL community, the ELL Training Network will focus on supporting refugee learners. Over the next two years, we will offer professional development training to strengthen the teaching skills of ELL instructors and volunteer tutors who work with refugee learners. The training will provide information, strategies, and inclusive instructional practices to better support refugee learners in the ELL classroom.

VESL Network

Professional development for volunteer ELL tutors

Since 2005, VESL has supported the professional development of volunteer ELL tutors throughout the city of Calgary. The project is supported by Calgary Learns with funding support provided by Alberta Advanced Education. VESL is the collaborative effort of three Calgary ELL service providers with long standing volunteer programs: Bow Valley College, the Calgary Public Library, and the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society.

The project offers six face-to-face training workshops throughout the year to volunteers who support language learners.

Visit the VESL Network to learn about upcoming training opportunities, get access to tutor tips and handouts from previous workshops, and learn about our volunteers' contributions in Calgary.

What are Networks?

A virtual space to engage in professional learning and enrich your practice
Where We Started

In 2011, we launched the ESL Literacy Network – an online community of practice for ESL literacy practitioners. The award winning ESL Literacy Network received accolades from across North America and received an Innovation in Technology award.

This network is comprised of members from around the world and has recently moved to the Centre website.

Expanding our Networks

Our commitment to professional learning that builds capacity within our workplaces, led to the creation of the CEIIA PD Network for our faculty members to share expertise and enhance performance.

We have also created the VESL Network, an online space for volunteer tutors and recently launched the ELL Training Network for ELL practitioners.

Benefits of Participating

Each network provides opportunities to:

  • engage in professional learning
  • access resources to support your practice
  • expand your professional learning community
  • interact with your peers to share expertise, co-learn, and enhance teaching practices
