The CEIIA at the 2017 ATESL Conference

  • The Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement at the 2017 ATESL Conference

The following blog post was written by Jennifer Caswell, Community Liaison Officer at the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement. This blog post is part of our Conference Reflection blog series.

As a long-standing member of the English language teaching and learning community, the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement (CEIIA) was proud to support this year’s Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language (ATESL) conference as a sponsor and hosting a table in the publisher’s area.

On Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21, 2017, ATESL 2017 welcomed a community of 400+ faculty, staff, and administrators from across the province to the Westin in Calgary for two days of keynote speakers and a diverse range of presentations that asked delegates to consider the expanding possibilities of diversity and innovation in language training and programming.

Bow Valley College (BVC), and specifically the CEIIA, was well represented throughout the weekend with more than 30 faculty and staff in attendance, many of whom also presented to their colleagues. We’re also proud to count several BVC faculty among those ATESL conference committee members who worked tirelessly to plan and put on such a successful conference.

Over the course of the conference, the CEIIA table in the publisher’s area was a busy spot! We had scores of conversations with instructors and administrators from across the province. Between sessions, delegates stopped by for a bit of a chat and to learn how to become a CEIIA member and more about the CEIIA's language training and programs. Throughout we shared how we approach language training and programming from a collaborative, collegial perspective and that our work is rooted in a commitment to an open access sharing of tools and resources.

The CEIIA congratulates the ATESL board and conference committees on another successful conference and looks forward to what the coming year brings!
