The following blog post was written by Anita Withers, a faculty member with the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement.

Welcome to the International ELL Program at Bow Valley College.  Here are some essential facts about our program.

Who are the students?

All learners have an international student visa to Canada and they plan to study in a post-secondary institution here. The age range is broad, but the majority of the students are in their early twenties. They have finished high school in their countries and many have also completed a university degree and have had some work experience. The learners are from a wide variety of countries from all over the world.

What are the classes?

There are three levels: Preparation, ELL1 and ELL2. Learners should have a pre-intermediate level to start the program. After ELL2, learners can enter into the regular English for Academic Purposes classes (EAP1 and EAP2).

What do we teach?

We focus on language development through reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Learners are also taught academic skills. For example, students listen to lectures, learn paragraph and essay format, and develop presentation skills.

We pride ourselves on teaching using highly interactive activities that integrate all skills while including current events, Canadian culture, and project-based learning. These activities motivate students to learn English while integrating into Canada.

Stay tuned for upcoming blog posts where we will introduce a successful activity from each level. These activities can be adapted to any English language learning class.
