One of the reasons my learners opened a bank account is to have a debit card. In this blog I’d like to touch upon the benefits and dangers of having debit and credit cards.

Debit cards

My learners all have debit cards and tend to use it for most of their purchasing needs. If your learners are new to using debit cards, here are two great links on how they work:

Presently, I am having my learners record how many times they use their card in a month and then seeing if they are in danger of incurring any extra fees.

Students must enter the correct PIN number (1234) to use the ATM Simulator and the Debit Machine Simulator. The PIN is easy to remember, but please point out to your learners that it isn't a good PIN for their real account. The Newcomer Finances Instructor's Manual has more information.

Credit Cards

Because my learners are young, 18-25 years old, only one of them has a credit card. But they are all sure to have at least one in the near future. The benefits and dangers of having a credit card are great and is not something that could be covered in one simple lesson. In our math class we have been working on how simple interest works. This has been eye opening for most. Once we have gone through the basic concepts of how credit works, my plan is to show the benefits and dangers of credit cards through two fictitious characters: one who is fiscally responsible, the other not so much.

 I'd like to get a dialogue going on these rather large topics and how to present them simply but effectively. If you have any comments or ideas, please share.
